Ariel in Black

Ariel in Black was borne out of my love of Sylvia Plath’s work, my desire to intersect mainstream feminism with black feminism, and my fondness for crafting homemade writing challenges. The collection is my attempt to revolutionize poetry, just as Plath did, but by reinventing the imagery of black women in poetry by using an unusual form (the cento), unconventional source of inspiration, and confrontational approach to the writing. I like to think of this collection as a work of "black woman alchemy" - the supernatural ability that grown black women have to take something that isn't meant for us and make something that is defiantly and definitively ours. In her journals, Plath asked “Can you understand? Someone, somewhere, can you understand me a little, love me a little?” My hope is readers that appreciate poetry, craft, and a strong black female voice will read Ariel in Black and say "yes."
